Inception: Downtown Intersection

One of the summer's biggest hits obviously used a lot of computer generated imagery to put together the many different dream worlds but a lot of the film's key scenes were actually filmed right here in LA.

The first place that I immediately recognized is a nondescript downtown intersection where the characters first get in the car. Anyone who's every been to the financial district in downtown LA probably recognized this location right away:

This scene was shot at the intersection of Hope St and Wilshire Blvd in Downtown Los Angeles. In the background you can see the stairs going up to AON center which, until the early 90s, was the tallest building in Los Angeles. Across the street you can see an outlet of the “Famima!!” chain which is a Japanese convenience store chain that operates stores across Southern California and has numerous outlets in the downtown area.

Remington Steele: Laura Holt's Loft

The 1980s TV show Remington Steele was quite ahead of its time in more than one way. Years before the boom in the Downtown Los Angeles loft market, Laura Holt (played by the very talented Stephanie Zimbalist) was a resident of the area's Arts District. It took me quite a while to figure out where exactly the buildings used in the show were located, mainly because I'm not all that familiar with this particular corner of the downtown area.
Well, as it turns out producers of the show had to use two different locations because the building that was used in the second season was no longer available for filming.

The building that was used initially is called the Joannes Bros. Company Building and is located at the corner of East Traction Ave and South Hewitt St (800 E. Traction Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90013).

The building has changed very little over the years (almost 30 years!), except for the palm trees out front. This website has a nice clean shot of the building: You-are-here.com

The second building that was used for exterior shots of Laura's apartment is located just about a block north of the building above at 923 E 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (Yes, one block north but in a different zip code).

This brick building looks virtually the same, except for a few signs that have been added. It also houses a popular cafe called Metropol. You can actually have a coffee at Laura's old place.

In case you were wondering, all interior shots were filmed on a sound stage is Hollywood.

About the area:
At the time the show was filmed, this neighborhood would have been considered iffy at best and consisted mostly of abandoned warehouses and dilapidated buildings. Over the last couple of years, however, the area has seen quite a bit of residential development and is now home to many popular restaurants. This location is within walking distance of the Metro Gold Line Little Tokyo/Arts District station and is close to many downtown attractions. I highly recommend stopping by Union Station, which has been restored beautifully and, incidentally, was also featured on a 4th season Remington Steele episode.

Parenthood 1x6 - Lunch in the city/Biking with Dad

-When Haddie and Julia discuss her career they are in a nice outdoor restaurant with part of the San Francisco skyline in the background.
-Adam is sitting in a park with Haddie and he explains to her that her mom is responsible for the park in front of them.
Though the scenes are set in very different locations, they were actually filmed in the same location: Grand Hope Park in the South Park neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. Though the scene with Julia and Haddie actually shows some landmarks from San Francisco in the background, if you look closely you can tell that they were added by the special effects department.
This park is right at the corner of 9th and Hope St in Los Angeles, in a nice, up-and-coming area of Downtown Los Angeles, just a few blocks from the convention center, Staples center, and LA Live. The building that Haddie and Adam walk through is actually FIDM (aka the school Lauren Conrad goes to in "The Hills" and also where they shot the LA episodes of "Project Runway")

Parenthood, 1x6 - Sarah and Mark Holding Hands

When Sarah and Mark finally get some alone time, they walk through a nice little park, holding hands for the first time.
Though the show is set in Berkeley, this park is actually located in Santa Monica. It is a pocket park in the Ocean Park area called Hotchkiss Park, just a few blocks away from the Ocean and Main St. The white apartment building visible in the background is located at 3rd and Hollister and the park itself is just east of Stand St, between 3rd and 4th. Though popular with residents in the area, this park is always very quiet and offers some nice ocean views.
